Dallas-based Sigma Marble and Granite blends high-technology with dedicated customer service to provide quality marble, granite and tile installations. Last year turned out to be a good one for the firm, in part due to long-term projects, such as the Dallas Cowboys Stadium but also due to company leadership’s positive attitude.

“The recession is psychological,” says George Kanaan, president and founder of Sigma Marble. “If you believe in it, you fall for it; if you don’t you are fine. I’m serious. You need to keep your people positive, because everyone is scared.”

Sigma tackles projects throughout the Southwest. It branched into Florida this year, working on the Peabody Orlando Hotel expansion. In Texas, it worked on the Omni Hotel in Fort Worth and the Winspear Opera House and the Ritz-Carlton, both in Dallas.

Founded in 1986, Sigma takes the high road. Kanaan advises staff not to argue or haggle. He lives by the company motto that “only the best will do.” Sigma is structured more as a general contractor than a specialty firm, with project mangers, engineers, superintendents and safety people in the field.

Sigma fabricates at its Houston location and has expanded that facility, doubling its fabrication space. Sigma develops its own software and relies on computerization to manage projects and deliver top-quality products.

“Work will pick up big time at the end of 2010, and we are ready for that,” Kanaan says. “Things are picking up already.”
