“The greatest challenge is we have to construct this 1.7-million-sq-ft project in just over 24 months, so we have a very fast construction schedule that we have to put in place,” says Kirsch.
He says this test will be highlighted during the height of construction in mid 2014, when crews will be installing about 40,000 sq-ft of cast-in-place concrete deck every week in order to meet the deadline.
The project, which is being funded from increased airport rental car fees, is currently in pre-design stage, with Sundt and its partner working on budgets, constructability issues, and value engineering. Kirsch says they expect to break ground in July of 2013.
The Rental Car Center is Sundt’s second aviation construction project in four years at San Diego International Airport. The company is also working with JV partner Kiewit on the final stages of construction on the $227 million Terminal 2 landside expansion, which is due to be complete in spring 2013.
