While demolishing the five-story former Chinese Hospital in San Francisco, senior project superintendent Jerry McKinley snapped this photo when he noticed that the cruncher on his crew's excavator—which chews through concrete—mimicked the shape of the iconic Transamerica Pyramid in the background. "I've been working in downtown San Francisco for 30 years, so I love all the landmarks and I tried to get that in the back of the picture," McKinley says.
At ENR California press time, crews were finishing a 30-ft excavation for the eight-level, 99,181-sq-ft replacement hospital. Construction is to be completed at the end of 2015. The project is in the heart of the city's busy Chinatown district, so the team has had to deal with everything from a tight site to daily deliveries of seafood and meat to the neighborhood's many stores and eateries.
McKinley regularly uses his iPhone 5 to document jobsite progress. He uses the phone's camera with its HDR setting switched on, which helps improve picture quality, lighting and color saturation.
