Connecticut
Bridgeport University To Install Fuel Cell
The University of Bridgeport will be able to generate about 80% of its power on site by year-end when a 1.4-megawatt fuel cell power plant is completed.
The combined heat-and-power plant is part of a microgrid that will operate independently from the main electric grid should that energy source shut down due to severe weather or other issues, says FuelCell Energy Inc., Danbury, Conn., which is installing, operating and maintaining the plant.
The school will purchase the electricity and heat generated from the fuel cell under a multiyear agreement. FuelCell says it expects to close on permanent financing on or before the plant becomes operational.
The project is part of the state's low-emission renewable credit program that supports adoption of environmentally friendly and affordable distributed generation. Last July, Connecticut became the first state to launch a statewide microgrid pilot program.
