The Top 20 Under 40 members are also heavily involved in giving back to the community. Several are involved in the ACE Mentor Program; one has taken his knowledge of bridge construction abroad by volunteering with Engineers Without Borders; and another volunteers for the New York City Green Codes Task Force.

An independent panel of judges, which included ENR New York's first Legacy Award winner Andrew Herrmann, evaluated all 44 entries and chose an outstanding group of industry professionals. Selections were based on criteria that included community service, career experience, industry involvement and professional certifications, licensures and/or accreditations currently held or in progress. To qualify for the 20 Under 40 competition, candidates had to be under the age of 40 as of Jan. 1, 2015, and based in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut.

Herrmann

Andrew W. Herrmann

Until his retirement from the partnership in 2010, Herrmann had been involved in managing Hardesty & Hanover, including overall office management, human resources, finances, risk management and legal and insurance issues. He also served as a partner-in-charge providing management and engineering for many of the firm's bridge projects. These include the $120-million Cross Bronx/Bruckner Expressway Interchange project and the $200-million Whitestone Expressway Interchange, both in New York City. In addition, Herrmann served in numerous national roles for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), including president. He now is president emeritus. During his three-year presidential term, Herrmann represented the group's 140,000 members by traveling extensively across the U.S. to link with local sections, branches and universities. Marengo

Marengo has more than 25 years of experience in the civil engineering field and has been involved in design and construction management/inspection of major projects throughout New York and New Jersey. She is the founder of Ensign Engineering P.C., a multidiscipline, WBE consulting engineering firm, which recently added certification as a veteran-owned small business after Marengo returned from deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, where she was commanding officer of 582 Navy Seabees. In addition, Marengo is principal-in-charge of design and construction administration on projects ranging in value from $50,000 to $30 million. Some of her most notable projects include the $35-million Vaughn College of Aeronautical Engineering & Technology at LaGuardia Airport and the $24-million Park West High School project, both in New York City. She holds an M.S. degree in construction management from New York University.

Scaglione

Scaglione has more than 35 years of progressive leadership, managerial and technical experience in various diversified public and private engineering organizations. He has extensive experience on large-scale infrastructure projects, ranging from facilities and transportation to water and wastewater treatment plants. Prior to his current role at HDR, Scaglione was an executive at Michael Baker Corp. and at URS Corp. In addition, he is a retired colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Highlights of his 28-year military career include his post-9/11 presidential call-up as the Reserves 514th Civil Engineering Squadron Commander at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey. Scaglione is also a licensed New York state professional engineer, a certified construction manager and a LEED Accredited Professional. He holds an M.S. degree from the University of New Mexico and an MBA from New Mexico Highlands University.

Allen

Scott Allen

At age 29, Allen, a Perkins+Will project designer, has already left a considerable mark globally on more than 30 million sq ft of buildings across five continents. In the past two years, he has won a competition to renovate and redesign a confidential consumer products company's 500,000-sq-ft North America headquarters in New Jersey; helped secure a net-zero office development for Biomed Realty in Greenburgh, N.Y.; and now is designing that company's first major Manhattan project—a 60-story luxury residential tower. He says he strives to challenge conventional design with meaningful solutions that break free from predetermined ideas. Allen's ideas, lectures and work have been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Architectural Record and many other business and construction publications. He also is active in United Cerebral Palsy of New York City and Happy Hearts Fund, advising the nonprofit organizations on good design and social responsibility.

Anderson

Jean Anderson
Making her mark in global design

Anderson has been a leader in Gensler's design department for 17 years, building the company's portfolio in markets spanning from manufacturing to fashion. She was hired by the architecture firm just weeks after graduating from Cornell University with a B.S. degree in interior design. Now as the firm's global leader in its consumer products practice, she designs and directs workspaces for clients that have included the National Basketball Association, Revolution Studios, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Michael Kors, L'Oréal and Sam Edelman. Last year, Anderson was design director for Interior Design magazine's new workspace, the home for Sandow Media. She worked closely with industry leader Cindy Allen, editor-in-chief of Interior Design, and was featured in the magazine's May 2014 issue. Anderson works in a group of 15 design directors and leads Gensler's gServe group, which coordinates its firm-wide community service efforts. The group works with nonprofit organizations, and in 2014, partnered with Rebuilding Together to restore homes damaged by Superstorm Sandy in Rockaway, N.Y.

Ballard

Christine Ballard

Inspired by both her father and a high school physics teacher, Ballard developed a passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics at an early age. With an M.S. degree in systems engineering and engineering management from Stevens Institute of Technology, Ballard now provides consulting and engineering services in planning, design, construction and inspection of water supply and distribution systems. As group manager for one of the firm's fastest growing practices that is responsible for 12% of current revenue, she has been involved in some of the firm's most high profile work—including repair of Superstorm Sandy damage. She also holds four public engineering positions in Red Bank and Eatontown, N.J. When appointed, Ballard became one of the youngest municipal engineers in New Jersey. She also is a T&M Associates stockholder—the youngest and first woman in company history selected. Ballard also founded T&M's Young Professionals Group, which ensures that emerging leaders play a role in the firm's growth. She also participates in the company's Lead the Way program, which encourages high school students to join in client site visits, and she is passionate about bringing more girls into the engineering field—volunteering with a local Girl Scout group's Inspiring Girls in Engineering program to encourage middle school girls to study STEM subjects.
