The $120-million Astoria Energy 575 MW Powerplant, Phase II is part of a 1,000-MW combined-cycle plant located in Astoria, Queens. The plant consists of two gas turbines and two auxiliary transformers. The project began in February 2009 and was completed last May. Due to a tight working area and schedule, the project required close coordination among all members of the team along with daily planning meetings. More than 1,000 building trade employees and more than 500 onsite construction laborers worked during peak construction periods on the plant, which is expected to decrease nitrogen oxide air emissions by 1,222 tons per year.
