Award of Merit-Health Care
The project team razed an aging brick wing of the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass., to make way for a larger $296-million, state-of-the-art complex. The 641,000-sq-ft addition offers 96 private in-patient rooms plus a cardiac center. Seven tunnels and bridges connect the new wing to the sprawling facility, whose main entrance was also renovated.
Great care went into every aspect of the job, especially when it came to a 9-year-old patient who would wave to ironworkers from his window. In response, they spray-painted his name on a beam. As more kids began waving, more names were added—as many as 200 in all. Ultimately, the Ironworkers Local 7 chapter donated a Wii video game system, a flat-screen TV and $2,900 to their new friends.
