The Barry Goldwater High School modernization project was fast-tracked in four phases, with work primarily done at night and over summer breaks in order not to disturb school operations. With tight site constraints and large crews, the construction team held site-wide safety meetings twice a day before each shift to address scope-specific items that would take place on the upcoming shift as well as a pre-shift stretching program to prevent soft tissue damage. McCarthy set up a safety incentive program rewarding safe work practices and procedures to promote subcontractor responsibility for safety on the job. The specific focus on safety for this job resulted in more than 250,000 man-hours between multiple shifts without a single recordable incident.
