International law firm Fulbright & Jaworski turned to Balfour Beatty Construction for the demolition and rebuilding of three-and-a-half floors—a total of 72,267 sq ft—at its Austin, Texas, office.
In 21 weeks, Balfour Beatty completed installation of an interconnecting grand staircase that had Bocci chandeliers interwoven in it and that spanned four floors.
Installing the stairway required "cutting a four-story hole in a high-rise and bringing all the steel in via crane through the windows," says Sanford Wyatt, Balfour Beatty project manager.
"Our basic strategy was centered around staging everything, getting those big pieces of steel in there and having to lay them down in a very small space," he says.
