Southeast Construction presents its third annual Top Design-Build Contractors ranking. Derived from information obtained during the Top Contractors survey conducted earlier this year, it documents the amount of revenue related to design-build activities by the contracting firms that participated in that ranking.

The Top Design-Build Contractors ranking is based upon 2009 regional revenue that each firm estimated came from design-build projects within the four-state region of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The ranking also includes more information about each firm, including the location of its main regional office, phone number and Web site address.

Taking the top spot again this year was San Antonio, Texas-based Zachry Holdings. The contractor, which has operations in Charlotte, N.C., reported approximately $348.2 million in ’09 design-build revenue from the four-state region, down slightly from the $379 million it reported a year ago.

Jumping into the second position was The Shaw Group of Baton Rouge, La. This was the first year that Shaw had participated in the magazine’s annual Top Contractors survey, the result of its recent, expanded activity in the Southeast. The company has been especially active with utility-related projects in the Carolinas, such as the $1.8-billion Cliffside Steam Station Modernization in North Carolina for Charlotte-based Duke Energy.

Shaw, which reported nearly $1.2 billion in total Southeast revenue for 2009, indicated that approximately $299.5 million came from design-build contracts.

Falling to third was Jacksonville, Fla.-based Haskell, with an estimated $239.1 million in 2009 regional design-build revenue. That’s down from the $309.8 million it reported a year ago.

Repeating in fourth place is Clark Construction Group of Tampa. Clark actually experienced an uptick in its regional design-build revenue for 2009. The contractor reported nearly $225.5 million in this work for 2009, up from the $203.6 million it reported a year ago.

Hensel Phelps Construction Co. of Orlando rounds out the top five, with nearly $218.8 million in 2009 Southeast design-build revenue.

Other firms that generated more than $100 million in Southeast design-build revenue completed the top 10 for this year’s ranking. These included: The Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. of Atlanta - $183.5 million; Balfour Beatty US of Atlanta - $140.9 million; Kiewit Corp., Peachtree City, Ga. - $139.4 million; BE&K Building Group of Charlotte - $137.4 million; and, in 10th place, Stellar of Jacksonville, Fla. - $121.2 million.

Total design-build revenue represented by this year’s ranking equals nearly $3.2 billion, down considerably from the roughly $4.4 billion included in last year’s ranking.
