Pharmaceutical manufacturer MedImmune is expanding its presence in Gaithersburg, Md., adding a $120 million, 308,000-sq-ft laboratory and office building at the company headquarters.
Tompkins Builders of Washington, D.C., broke ground on the project in April 2009 and expects to complete the work in December 2011. The nine-story facility will house up to 600 research and development scientists. Current plans call for opening four of the six laboratory floors, which will more than double the teams current space.
Tompkins, the design team and subcontractors are creating three-dimensional models for the project. Tompkins uses the model for design validation, preconstruction and construction coordination. The final model will be a coordinated 3D as-built mechanical, electrical and plumbing model for the end user.
The team is pursuing LEED-Gold certification.
The new laboratory building is the first project in a $600-million, five-year building program.
