Barnhart Balfour Beatty has announced the completion of the new Concert Hall and Arts Building on the Oceanside campus of MiraCosta College. The buildings are the newest additions to the colleges Creative Arts Complex and will provide performance and teaching spaces for the schools music department.
Barnhart Balfour Beatty provided construction management services for the Creative Arts expansion, which includes the addition of the 12,000-sq-ft Concert Hall and a new 4,100-sq-ft Arts Building.
The 400-seat Concert Hall has been designed specifically for vocal and instrumental performances and features a rehearsal and recital room. The Arts Building contains a lecture classroom and multi-purpose arts classroom.
Both projects were designed by tBP/Architecture, Inc. of Newport Beach.
Barnhart Balfour Beatty previously provided construction management services for MiraCostas $15-million Creative Arts Replacement Building, completed in April 2008. The three-level, 21,600-sq-ft building includes rehearsal spaces, state-of-the-art recording studios, a 150-seat performance hall, art studios and a rooftop open-air studio with a sail-like canopy. It replaced two buildings that were condemned in 2003 because the soil underneath them was shifting.
Barnhart Balfour Beatty team members included Anton Greenville, LEED-AP, executive vice president; Mike Weber, project manager; Bryan Rasmussen, project superintendent; and Chris Drinko, LEED-AP, construction manager.
Meanwhile, Barnhart Balfour Beatty recently broke ground on the $8.8-million San Dieguito Academy Performing Arts Center in Encinitas for the San Dieguito Union High School District.
The performing arts center is a new, 17,120-sq-ft facility that will incorporate theater and music wings to serve the needs of both drama and music students.
The Clayton E. Liggett Theatre wing, named after the late drama teacher Clayton Liggett, who taught at the school from 1966 through 1985, will include a 225-seat indoor theater, classrooms and practice areas, dressing rooms, a scenery lab, a 500-seat outdoor stage with sound reflectors, and storage space for props and sets.
The state-of-the-art music wing will feature a 3,700-sq-ft rehearsal hall, six sound-proof practice rooms, a music library, an instrument storage room and a recording arts classroom.
Funded by the school district, the state of California and donations from the San Dieguito Academy Foundation, the project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2011.
The architectural firm of John Sergio Fisher & Associates of Tarzana designed the project.
Members of the Barnhart team include Sean Hulen, vice president; Grace Chan, project manager; and Gerry Hirata, project superintendent.
