Also in Wyoming, Wadman Corp. is finishing up the $25-million terminal expansion and renovation at Jackson Hole Airport. On schedule for completion by December, the project nearly doubled the size of the existing terminal, adding a 55,000-sq-ft ticketing lobby.
Designed and built to earn LEED-Silver rating, the project is a collaborative effort between San Francisco-based Gensler and Jackson Hole’s Carney Logan Burke Architects, with Swanson Rink of Denver overseeing the engineering and mechanical design.
Yampa Valley Regional Airport
In northwest Colorado, the $7.8-million expansion and remodel at Yampa Valley Regional Airport in Hayden got underway in early August. Holmquest-Lorenze Construction Co. of Steamboat Springs is general contractor.
Jacobs, the project manager, provided full design services for all phases of the project, with Swanson Rink implementing the design for a new baggage handling system.
The terminal expansion and remodel, scheduled for completion in December 2011, will add a second baggage carousel and created a new ground-floor restaurant on the main level. The project involves demolishing and replacing the oldest section of building with a new two-level, 14,000-sq-ft building.
It also includes enclosing an outdoor “notch” area on the north perimeter of the terminal to create additional indoor space for passengers waiting for security screening.
Federal FAA grants covered approximately $6 million of the cost. Local airport funds and grants distributed by the Colorado Dept. of Transportation made up the balance.
Delays in receiving federal approval to start the bid process and award the contract have pushed a majority of the work back to summer and fall 2011. The project team chose to shuffle the schedule rather than close areas of the airport during ski season.
Montrose Regional Airport
Jacobs is also providing project management, planning and design services for the $3.2-million terminal expansion and renovation at Montrose Regional Airport in Montrose, Colo. The firm collaborated with local architect Patrik Davis on the design, which will create a new ticketing lobby and more space for airline operations. H.W. Houston Construction of Pueblo is the general contractor.
The project, slated for completion by November 2011, will add approximately 11,000 sq ft on the south end of the building and renovate almost 9,000 sq ft of existing space.
It will also upgrade the airport’s current FAA security level, equipping the terminal with mechanical baggage screening and explosive-detection equipment.
Bozeman Gallatin Field Airport
In southwest Montana, Bozeman Gallatin Field Airport is anticipating growth and is in the midst of carrying out the largest terminal expansion project in the state’s history. The $45-million project, which broke ground in May 2009 and created an estimated 175 jobs, will more than double the size of the terminal, enabling the airport to handle as many as 1.5 million passengers yearly.
The two-year project, with Bozeman-based Martel Construction as construction manager, consists of a three-story addition and an extensive remodel of the existing terminal building. Bozeman’s Prugh and Lenon Architects partnered with Reynolds, Smith & Hillson the design, which created a new ticketing area, five additional gates, a third baggage-claim carousel and expanded food and retail concession space.
Funding for the project came from a combination of federal grants, passenger and rental car facility charges and approximately $16 million in airport revenue bonds. The bottom line also benefited from bids about 25% lower than estimated.
