Currently under way in Provo, Utah, CH2M Hill's Provo Enclosure Canal project closes up a 21-mile-long canal that was an open water supply. The $150-million project will address public safety concerns associated with an open canal located in an urban area and replace it with a 126-in.-dia pipeline. When completed, the pipeline will have enough capacity to deliver 626 cfs. Enclosing the canal reduces evaporation and seepage losses, improves water quality and enhances system reliability while reducing maintenance costs.
Transportation Management
On the transportation side, CH2M Hill is providing program management, design management, project management, construction management, asset management and public relations services for the six-year, $1-billion joint venture Connecting Idaho-GARVEE highway improvement program for the Idaho Transportation Dept. The project encompasses six corridors covering more than 70 miles of highway throughout the state. The GARVEE program is the single largest public works initiative in Idaho's history, providing employment for more than 7,600 construction workers.
While the struggle over national infrastructure funding has put a drag on the economy, Bowen says CH2M Hill's Boise office is able to shift its resources to take advantage of areas where the action is taking place. As a result, the Boise office is also assisting with statewide transportation plans in North Dakota, where the oil boom has spurred tremendous pressure for infrastructure projects and the state has made funding available to get the projects done now.
City of Centennial Public Works
CH2M Hill serves as manager of public works for the city of Centennial, Colo. In 2008, the city launched its own public works department through a public-private partnership with CH2M Hill, creating one of the nation’s largest public-private partnerships for public works services.
Under the partnership, the city retains direct control of public works operations, with CH2M Hill operating as an extension of the city. CH2M Hill provides services such as transportation planning, traffic engineering and operations, pavement management, street and traffic infrastructure maintenance, capital improvement programs, snow and ice control for streets, street sweeping and debris pickup along major roadways and permits for work within city rights of way. CH2M Hill also created an innovative citizen call center that operates around the clock, serving as a single point of contact for all citizen concerns for all city functions, not just public works.
