Shaffer • Baucom Engineering & Consulting is celebrating its 15-year anniversary. The Lakewood, Colo.-based engineering firm was founded to provide engineering and consulting services to institutional, industrial, federal and commercial clients. SBEC specializes in the areas of health care, higher education, K-12 education, aerospace, industrial and science and technology facilities design.
Prominent SBEC projects over the last 15 years include Boulder Community Foothills Hospital, the first hospital in the nation to achieve a LEED rating (Silver); University of Colorado at Boulder, Indoor Practice Facility Renovation and Addition (achieved LEED Platinum in 2011); Colorado School of Mines Brown Hall and Mining Addition (achieved LEED Gold in 2010); University of Colorado at Boulder Institute of Behavioral Science (achieved LEED Platinum in 2010); and numerous projects for Craig Hospital and Lockheed Martin Space Systems.
SBEC was founded in 1998 by Dennis Baucom and Gary Shaffer. “We briefly worked out of Dennis’ house on Raccoon Creek Golf Course,” Shaffer said. At the time, the firm consisted only of the founders and two other employees. “We’ve grown steadily to a staff of 30, providing mechanical, electrical and plumbing solutions for large, complex projects and long-term owners,” Shaffer added.
More than 75% of SBEC’s engineers are LEED-accredited professionals.
SBEC’s first clients included Parkview Medical Center, Craig Hospital, the University of Colorado at Boulder and the Colorado Dept. of Human Services. SBEC continues to provide M/E/P design services to those clients.
