South Jordan Health Center
South Jordan, Utah
Designed to become the first LEED-Gold-certified health care facility in Utah, the 210,000-sq-ft South Jordan Health Center brings much-needed services to the southwest Salt Lake Valley.
The three-story facility offers primary, emergency and specialty care services with plenty of amenities: AirMed helicopter transport, a full-service pharmacy, in-house branches of the Huntsman Cancer Institute and the Moran Eye Center, a café, espresso bar and large conference room with facilities suitable for banquets, seminars and educational training.
It is one of the first health care facilities in Utah to feature self-check-in kiosks to reduce wait times and increase patient privacy.
The project team overcame several challenges while building the hospital. Early in the project, the contractor worked closely with the architect on a new and relatively unknown technical exterior-skin system that required precision within 1/16 of an inch.
Three months from completion, Layton dealt with the aftermath of a broken 3-ft, 4-in. cast-iron wye strainer that allowed approximately 15,000 gallons of water to cascade through the ceiling from the top level of the west wing, damaging drywall and finishes. Despite these and other unforeseen challenges, the project finished on schedule in just 15 months.
