Instead, the pension system has advised the Nasher to aim the roof apertures 45° farther west, out of the direct path of the reflections. The new angle would admit western sun. To handle that, engineer RWDI devised an oculus with projecting cowls that would deflect that direct sunlight and "restore natural light levels in the galleries comparable to the existing ocular roof prior to construction of the Museum Tower," says RWDI's report.
Strick rejected the alteration suggestion, saying the report drew "demonstrably false conclusions."
Other death-ray cases have had simpler remedies. In Las Vegas, strategically placed umbrellas fixed poolside overheating, created by the Vdara Hotel's reflective-glass facade. In London, solar shades will be added to the concave face of the still-unfinished 37-story 20 Fenchurch Street, which was melting plastic parts of parked cars.
