Richard Hale, who runs his family business, the Hale Corp., a small contractor in Monrovia, Calif., has been a longtime supporter of Pasadena Ronald McDonald House. He has been on the volunteer board since 2005 and served as board vice president for two years. As a board member, his role includes fundraising and chairing events for the charity. In addition, his family business and his parents have been supporting Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House since the early 1990s.
In 2008, Richard’s then three-year-old son, Nathan, was hospitalized at Children’s Hospital of Orange County for febrile seizures. Along with the worry and stress of having his toddler hospitalized came the nearly 40-mi commute between where Richard lived/worked in Monrovia and where his son was at CHOC in Orange. In order to make his ordeal more manageable, Richard was able to stay at the Orange County Ronald McDonald House (he chose to pay the optional donation for his stays there).
“The main benefit of the Ronald McDonald House for me was bonding and connecting with other parents going through a similar situation and having conversations with these parents as guests living at the house,” he says.
With Richard’s enthusiastic support of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California, it’s no wonder that he’s helping with the fundraising efforts for the expansion of the Pasadena facility, which opened in 2004 and has served more than 1,200 families. Pasadena Ronald McDonald House, which is located near Huntington Memorial Hospital, can house 10 families nightly and needs to expand.
Pasadena Ronald McDonald House’s next fundraising effort is “Hits for Hope” on Saturday, June 12 in West Covina. Richard Hale is the chairman for this event, which is a family softball tournament.
