G2 LNG LLC and Southern California Telephone & Energy LNG are planning to build the Monkey Island LNG Processing Export Facility and Port at the Calcasieu Ship Channel in Cameron. Financing of the project is secured, and further advancement is pending federal permit approval. The target for beginning construction is mid-2017. The proposed facility would be able to export 14 million metric tons of LNG a year. The project is valued at $9 billion. CPS Energy, NRG Texas and Toshiba America Nuclear Energy Corp. are planning an expansion to the South Texas Nuclear Power Plant. Work will involve construction of two additional reactors, Units 3 and 4, to the facility’s two existing boiling water reactors. Plans are in progress, and a license is expected in 2016. The Lone Star Rail District and Texas Dept. of Transportation are planning construction of an approximately 110-mile commuter rail running from Austin to San Antonio with 14 station stops. Environmental and engineering studies are under review, with completion expected in 2016/2017. Final design will begin after federal reviews are approved.
