For years, Carbon County’s departments were scattered across the area, an inconvenience for residents. The new 58,000-sq-ft, two-story building combines all court and administrative functions into one easy-to-access facility. The energy-efficient design includes a geothermal heat pump system, sunshades on windows, reflective light shelves, skylights and clerestory windows. Exterior stone walls and red sandstone reflect the natural environment. The atrium is highlighted by a staircase, a veterans memorial wall and a glass skylight that runs nearly the length of the building. During initial design, the team learned the property to the west had an underground river running through it. Crews drilled test holes and checked them often so that the building could be designed with proper drainage and waterproofing.
