Planning

Florida

The Florida Dept. of Transportation is planning to replace the aging northbound span of the Howard Frankland Bridge connecting Tampa and St. Petersburg.  The new three-mile-long bridge will include four non-tolled/general-use lanes, two tolled express lanes in both the north and southbound directions and a 12-ft-wide shared-use path. Once the new bridge is constructed, the existing northbound bridge will be removed. RS&H has been selected as designer. FDOT expects to award the bid in 2019. Construction is slated to start in 2020, with the bridge opening to traffic in 2024. Once the new bridge is constructed, traffic patterns will flip. The current southbound span, built in 1990, will become the new northbound span, carrying traffic to Tampa. The new bridge will move traffic southbound into St. Petersburg. The project is valued at $814 million. Florida Dept. of Transportation, 11201 N. McKinley Drive, Tampa, 33612. DR#18-00904506.
