This low-level nuclear-waste-handling facility is the newest component of the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s national laboratory complex. The project provided permanent disposal capability through the build-out of a below-grade vault disposal area that includes 446 precast concrete vaults rated for 500-year performance, a 4,900-sq-ft maintenance building, a 3,900-sq-ft administration building and supporting infrastructure and utilities.

The project team formulated concrete forms, along with two custom concrete mixes specifically tailored to the geochemical environment and interactions at the project site. Experts on nuclear safety and environmental performance were brought on board to ensure the project met operational needs for long-term performance while reducing risk and maintaining regulatory compliance. The project team, which had zero accidents in nearly 100,000 work hours, conducted pre-job briefings at the beginning of each shift or when a task warranted special planning. Crews safely rigged and handled more than 17,700 tons of precast components during 2.5 years of work.
