The Kearns Athlete Training and Event Center creates a new wing for the Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center and connects it to the existing Utah Olympic Oval. The new facility is home to the U.S. Speedskating program and includes training areas, hydrotherapy pools and other support space built behind glass curtain walls designed to bring in natural light.
The initial excavation presented several challenges, including working around previously unidentified sewer lines along the east side of the Olympic Oval. Also, crews had to negotiate the large concrete footings that hold the Olympic Oval’s roof tie-downs. The team extended the sewer lines under the new building and ran a new sewer main to the east of it rather than encasing existing lines in a steel sleeve, which would have extended the project schedule.
