The Westpointe Career and Technical Center is home to Salt Lake Community College’s programs in advanced composites, welding fabrication, solar energy, diesel mechanics and commercial driving. The 121,000-sq-ft facility includes 34 labs and a three-acre diesel truck driving range. The building’s large scale provides flexibility for evolving classroom or instructional needs.

The design incorporated high-performance building standards and strategies for reducing energy and water consumption and long-term operational costs. The project team selected an unusual northclad extruded metal wall panel system to provide an efficient building envelope. The system includes alternating perforated and solid finishes in the panels to help break up massing along the building’s 600-ft-long facade.

Other design concepts were intended to create environments that stimulate and encourage learning, such as higher ceilings and visual connections to the outside as well as providing more daylight to boost cognition and enhance concentration. The building also features places for students and faculty to interact and socialize in several collaborative learning spaces.
