The design-build team of A M King delivered a processing facility for Southern Foods that enables the 66-year-old company to operate in a larger and more modern space that can handle greater volumes. Built in 88,000 sq ft of vacant shell space in Greensboro, N.C., the completed facility includes a 13,500-sq-ft food processing area that houses a 4,200-sq-ft meat aging room fitted with high-tech temperature and humidity controls and large viewing windows. It also features a seafood processing area; a cheese processing room; a large culinary center; and express purchasing for the general public that stocks certified Angus beef and multiple varieties of seafood. The scope also included 14,250 sq ft of dry storage, 12,660 sq ft of office mezzanine, 11,585 sq ft of freezers and 11,429 sq ft for coolers and loading docks. Crews completed more than 73,000 work hours with no OSHA recordable incidents or lost-time accidents. The $12.5-million project was completed below budget. Despite encountering “outside influences to the owner’s existing facility” that caused the schedule to be modified, the eight-month project was delivered on time, according to contractor A M King.
