Racing against the spread of COVID-19, the project team collaborated in a design-build effort to create a 1,000-bed field hospital in less than a month. Maximizing the use of prefabricated and readily available materials, participants created five event tents totaling 200,000 sq ft equipped with patient care pods fabricated by a convention exhibit designer. Power and data lines were routed through the floor joist to a power post in the center rear of the pod, allowing flexibility in positioning and accessing patient beds.

Since many elements were repetitive, spacing equipment on a common visual rhythm made for an environment emphasizing precision, cleanliness and order. Lean construction principles helped ensure the project remained within budget and on schedule, and aided in the coordination of extensive MEP installations required for freestanding structures. Installation of electrical circuits, ducts, pipes, light fixtures and fire alarms in a regular pattern gave the space a clean industrial look.

Although owner decisions added to the cost and schedule, the original contract scope was completed within the negotiated budget in just 21 days.
