Umenhofer was documenting the work on Sacred Heart University’s Martire Family Arena for construction manager Consigli in September when he noticed workers installing the large glass panels for the huge curtain wall of the arena. “From ground level they’re pretty high up so I had to stand on the mezzanine level and shoot across the arena,” he says.
Umenhofer says he likes the photograph’s “gorgeous fall colors framed by the rough steel. I purposely framed [the worker] using the rule of thirds to balance the detail in the foreground with the wash of color in the background.”
The 122,580-sq-ft arena, which hosted its first ice hockey game on Jan. 14, features the latest technology in ice management to support a National Hockey League standard rink. The facility also houses world-class strength and training areas, locker rooms, lounges, a sports medicine and hydrotherapy suite and a pro shop. A practical learning laboratory enhances educational opportunities for various disciplines.
