The AdventHealth Training Center, a new facility in downtown Orlando that serves as the training site for the Orlando Magic basketball team, was also designed to serve as a medical hub to provide innovative training and medical services for professional athletes and the local community.

The Balfour Beatty team was engaged in the schematic phase of the project to inform the designers on material selection, including the possibility of cost escalation issues and long-lead delivery planning. To execute the Magic’s vision for a welcoming environment, the team used Olde Savannah walnut wood for millwork that had a six-month lead time.

“The Orlando Magic wanted a facility that deepened connections and opportunities for the local community as well as a cutting-edge NBA training center to attract and retain top talent,” says Scott Skidelsky, Southeast president for Balfour Beatty.

The Balfour Beatty team was responsible for evaluating the original beam system and switching to post-tension concrete to make sure the system matched the efficiencies of the local market.

The Magic had a vision for a hybrid skylight in the locker room centered around a 6,000-sq-ft team family room, complete with a full-size commercial kitchen, dining areas, lounge areas, outdoor patio, putting green and grab-and-go nutrition bar. To optimize performance and conditioning, the space features an 8,000-sq-ft state-of-the-art weight room, an outdoor lap pool, recovery pools, recovery rooms and an outdoor turf space. The practice gym has two full-size basketball courts and two half-size courts with high-tech cameras and a proprietary player monitoring system.

The center has one of the most expansive locker rooms in the NBA. It features high-end finishes, walk-in lockers, nap rooms, a salon, infrared sauna and more. Players have access to leading training and recovery technologies, including high-altitude and full-body cryotherapy chambers.

The 35,000-sq-ft AdventHealth clinic offers multidiscipline medicine, and the lobby features floor-to-ceiling smart glass windows that can become opaque for private practices.
