Jim Pappas III
Sustainability Director, U.S. East Domestic
AECOM

Pappas says resilience and sustainability work, along with low- carbon materials, represent an important aspect of area projects. He says that the Federal Highway Administration’s $1.2-billion Low Carbon Construction Materials grant “has many states looking to research and deploy low-carbon construction materials to further reduce carbon emissions beyond the carbon-reduction work contemplated in the planning and design of projects.”

Among other regional projects, Pappas points to the planned Wilmington Riverfront Transportation Infrastructure Project. It aims to improve connectivity of the riverfront area through multimodal avenues. It also includes stormwater management by adding drainage outfalls, tide control valves and 2 ft of clean fill beneath proposed transportation improvements. Moreover, the project would repair an existing bulkhead and build a new one.

The project received a $17-million grant from the U.S. Dept. of Transportation’s Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity Program.
