An iconic building on Vanderbilt’s campus that dates back to 1875, Kirkland Hall houses the Office of the Chancellor, the provost and other vice chancellors. One of Vandy’s five original buildings, it was first called the Main Building and contained all of the university’s classrooms and laboratories.

The building’s $46-million renovation—its first since 1988—included restoration of the masonry envelope and terra-cotta, replacement of all exterior windows and structural modifications. Crews also gutted all interior finishes and non-bearing partitions and replaced existing mechanical systems, electrical gear and existing elevators.

Additionally, front and side entries were renovated and restored. The rear entry and stairwell were demolished and reconstructed. Other renovations included executive-level offices, conference rooms, open office landing spaces, a catering kitchen, break rooms and restrooms. New additions include an AV suite with a video studio, voice-over room and control room.

Skanska used laser scanning, which gave all parties—Skanska staff, Vanderbilt University, Centric Architecture, SOM, engineers and trade partners—a chance to review a virtual model ahead of a traditional building schedule. The shared model became a valuable communication tool during the preconstruction phase, improving alignment among the team.

The two-year project was completed below budget and on schedule in December 2023.
