The project included a new manufacturing line, increased warehouse and distribution capacity, office space for the custom storage container manufacturer, refrigerated containers, containerized shelters and modular building systems. Erecting the 207,000-sq-ft preengineered addition involved infrastructure upgrades for electrical services, stormwater management and sanitary sewer piping. The team also installed a customized 14-section, 70-ft-long, 35-kV switchgear along with three 2500-kVA transformers to power the existing and new facilities while still allowing Sea Box’s solar power to contribute to their operations.
The production line also has a network of conduits and cable trays, four Kaiser compressors, compressed air piping, argon and CO2 tanks and piping, sprinkler piping and pre-action detection in required areas. High temperature ovens, specialized paint and blast booths and a thermal oxidizer were installed.
Five new 20-ton KoneCranes supporting a semi-automatic container production line and fully robotic welding stations can be seen from a floating skyway that offers a bird’s-eye view of production. New siphonic roof drainage systems shrink the size of required stormwater piping. A series of concrete trenches, pits, lowered or customized foundations and custom structural features were designed to complete these.
While the building scope expanded exponentially during construction, the $50.7-million project finished below budget and ahead of schedule in 18 months.
