Built in 1994, this recreation center was in need of an update to meet the area’s growing needs. As part of a $34-million effort, a 5,000-sq-ft renovation updated existing office spaces and the entry lobby, while a 38,000-sq-ft addition included a gymnasium with an indoor elevated running track, climbing gym, multipurpose cardio and exercise equipment studios as well as day care facilities. Outside is a 3,000-sq-ft space that hosts a zero-depth splash pad and patio. Low-volatile organic compounds and recycled content materials were used in the transition and renovated areas as well.
Wyoming winters create harsh working environments, with heavy snowfall, high winds and temperatures often as low as -30°F. The team constructed temporary enclosures around scaffolding and masonry settings and hooked up heaters. Snow blankets were used in the exterior work zones along with ground thaw heaters. The foundation system was originally designed as a helical pier, but after ground testing, the team realized the site’s soil was unsuitable. Making a quick pivot, the drilling subcontractor provided a micropile design that stretched down 28 ft deep and mobilized equipment and materials to limit schedule impacts to just one week.
