Members of City Club of Washington have something new to toast following renovation of the 11,500-sq-ft high-end private club.
The project entailed the reconfiguration of banquet space and updating of interiors at the 25-year-old club located in Washington, D.C.'s Penn Quarter.
The team provided interior finish modifications such as solid mahogany paneling and trim throughout, broadloom carpeting, metallic-glaze faux-finish coating, Italian marble and granite flooring, high-end fabric panels and wall covering and a custom wine chiller.
Despite the project's $1-million construction budget, Turner Construction Co., Arlington, Va., went outside the region and brought in Orlando, Fla.-based Advanced Millwork Inc. because of its reputation for quality and the team's need to deliver high-end results.
Throughout the renovation, the the club had to be open to members, and there were strict building management noise ordinances for the builders.
Rather than closing off work areas entirely, the team installed small windows in temporary partitions to provide a safe view into the renovation in progress.
The team's strategy required extensive pre-construction planning and coordination to ensure that work would remain on track and not distrupt club activities.
Rule Joy Trammel + Rubio's design also includes new furnishings, newly commissioned works of art, custom member wine lockers, updated boardrooms, added meeting rooms and media rooms and a new patio. The new media room features an 83-in. television and comfortable seating and is designed to be rented out for parties and events. A new bar is equipped with iPads for member use. To help promote a business-friendly environment, the club features enhanced WiFi, cell phone reception, audiovisual and videoconferencing equipment and power outlets.
This project employed fast-track scheduling and phased scope. After 8,000 man-hours of work, the team delivered the renovated club on time and within budget with no OSHA-recordable incidents or lost time.
