Colorado & WyomingThe General Services Administration selected a design-build team in March to modernize the Byron G. Rogers Federal Office Building in Denver.
The team includes Mortenson Construction of Denver, serving as the design-builder; Bennett Wagner & Grody Architects, Denver, as the architect-of-record; HOK, also of Denver, as the design architect; Lakewood’s The RMH Group Inc., as the mechanical and electrical engineer; Rocky Mountain Institute of Boulder, as the high-performance green-building consultant; and Martin/Martin Inc. of Lakewood, as the structural engineer and blast consultant.
Work on the 620,000-sq-ft Byron G. Rogers government federal building, home to 11 federal agencies at 1961 Stout St. in downtown Denver, will include the complete design and construction of upgrades to the structural elements and all major building systems. The building upgrades are projected to reduce energy use by more than 80% over current levels and attain LEED-Platinum certification.
Work is scheduled to begin in October with completion in December 2012.
The Cherry Creek North Business Improvement District selected The Weitz Co. of Denver as the general contractor for its upcoming Capital Improvements Project.
The work is the first comprehensive upgrade to the Cherry Creek North streetscape in 20 years and will improve the overall business environment in the district.
The renovation and upgrade of Cherry Creek North’s streetscape, which includes improvements to its lighting, signage, intersections, landscaping, street furniture and other forms of infrastructure, will be made throughout the 16-block area of Cherry Creek North and is scheduled to begin in the next few weeks. In addition, the City and County of Denver will be including Cherry Creek North in its new “Smart Meter” replacement program across the city.
Construction on the project is expected to be complete in November.
At its February general meeting, the American Council of Engineering Cos. of Colorado named Julie Vlier of Tetra Tech the 2010 Outstanding Woman in Engineering.
The award was created by ACEC/CO to honor outstanding women in leadership positions by recognizing them for their professional achievements in engineering. Vlier is a manager in the water resources division of Tetra Tech and has led engineering design and water-quality studies. Her career in water quality has fostered innovative engineering approaches and technical applications on projects that demonstrate how engineering and science influences the development of long-term, sustainable, cost-effective designs.
UtahThe American Council of Engineering Cos. – Utah Chapter awarded Reaveley Engineers + Associates the Grand Conceptor Award for the structural design of the O.C. Tanner Flagship Renovation. This top award recognizes engineering achievements that demonstrate the highest degree of merit and ingenuity and provides a major contribution to technical, economic and social advancement.
The historic Salt Lake City Library, built in 1905, has been converted to the new home of the O.C. Tanner downtown jewelry store. In 1965 the historic library was converted into a planetarium, for which several modifications took place, resulting in the loss of many of the library’s original architectural features. After the planetarium closed, the building sat empty until O.C. Tanner purchased it for its new downtown flagship retail store.
The Associated General Contractors of Utah recognized W.W. Clyde & Co. and its sister company, Geneva Rock Products, with two separate awards at the AGC of Utah Annual Convention.
The firm earned “Best Utility Project of the Year” for the $24-million Spanish Fork Canyon Pipeline—Reach 1 project, a 2.3-mile-long, 96-in.-diameter welded steel pipeline, part of which goes under US-6 in Spanish Fork Canyon.
Geneva Rock Products earned the “$50+ Million Highway Project of the Year” for the $73.5-million SR-68 Bangerter Highway to Saratoga Springs design-build project, a design-build project completed to significantly improve safety and alleviate congestion between Draper and Saratoga Springs along Redwood Road.

Jay Nelson and Shannon Bond have joined Stanley Consultants Inc.’s Salt Lake City office as a project manager and project principal, respectively.
Nelson has 23 years of professional expertise in transportation planning, traffic engineering and project management. His work has included corridor studies, transportation master plans, transit studies, traffic impact analysis, traffic safety studies, traffic signal system planning, access management, and pedestrian and bicycle studies.
Bond has more than 20 years of experience, her most recent and relevant experience as a business development manager at a top-ranked consulting firm. Throughout her career, her role has grown from marketing manager to business development manager and now project principal.

Brett Goodman of Salt Lake City’s BHB Consulting Engineers recently received his California Professional Engineering License. He has worked for BHB since 2006. He graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
Jonathan Jensen, mechanical engineer with Spectrum Engineers of Salt Lake City, has earned a High-Performance Building Design Professional certification from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers.
IdahoStudents from Bishop Kelly High School in Boise claimed the title “Best Overall” during the fifth annual JETS/Ability One National Engineering Design Challenge.
The NEDC is a competition that educates young people about careers in engineering, raises social awareness and inspires a spirit of engagement and a willingness to help others. Five teams of high school students from across the country competed in the NEDC Finals at the Westin Arlington Gateway in Arlington, Va. The competition included presentations by each team in the morning, a design showcase during lunch and an awards ceremony in the afternoon.
The Bishop Kelly High School team presented the Portable Assistive Writing Device, an assistive technology designed to aid a person with a tremor to write more legibly using a pen or pencil.
Team members included: Dominic Chumich, Yuanhao Ding, Kate Franklin, Samuel Kosydar, Yi Zi Li, Lauren Naughton, Karl Schutz and Nic Wendt, led by team coaches Guy Hudson and Larry Neznanski. The team won $3,000 for its school.
Attorney Joe Meuleman has been named to serve a three-year term on the Construction Leadership Council Steering Committee of the Associated General Contractors of America.
The Steering Committee is comprised of 17 individuals chosen from local AGC chapters across the United States. It was created to help structure AGC of America for the future, to create and promote industry innovation, and to discuss issues and provide feedback to AGC leadership. Members of the Steering Committee participate on other AGC of America committees during their three-year term.
Meuleman is an attorney with the Boise law firm Meuleman Mollerup LLP, practicing in the areas of construction law and commercial litigation. He represents contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, sureties and project developers in a variety of construction-related disputes and transactions.
Before graduating from law school, Meuleman attained 10 years of construction experience in general construction, project management and cost controls. He has been actively involved with the Idaho AGC since 2004. Meuleman completed a legal internship with the AGC of America in 2006 in Arlington, Va., where he co-authored a report titled, “The AGC of America Guide to Employee Travel Reimbursement.”
