Bill Johnson of Duke Energy to Head Nuclear Lobby Group
CH2M Hill Cos., Denver, has elevated Terry A. Ruhl to president of its transportation-design and program- management business group. A 19-year veteran, he had been corporate senior vice president and group director of consulting and international operations. Ruhl also led CH2M Hill's aviation market and is a former chairman of the Airport Consultants Council.
Alonzo L. Fulgham has joined the firm's environmental-services business group as vice president for strategy and sustainable international development. The position is a newly created role, the firm tells ENR. Most recently, he was a vice president of International Relief and Development, a non-government organization. Fulgham also was COO of the U.S. Agency for International Development and was appointed, in 2009, by President Obama to a one-year term as acting agency administrator.
CH2M Hill also named John Fulton president of CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Co., its unit that manages environmental cleanup at the Hanford federal nuclear-weapons site in Washington state. Fulton was senior vice president of CH2M Hill's nuclear business group. He replaces John Lehew in the role as of Oct. 1. Lehew will be a CH2M Hill group senior vice president in Denver.
The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), the nuclear power trade group, elected John Young as chairman on July 20. The president and CEO of Dallas utllity holding company Energy Future Holdings (EFH), he succeeds William D. "Bill" Johnson, who resigned from the role and the institute board last month when he left as CEO of utility Duke Energy (ENR 7/23 p. 10). Young was NEI vice chairman. EFH owns Texas power generator Luminant Energy, retailer TXU Energy and 80% of transmission and distribution utility Oncor Electric Delivery. Young also had been executive vice president at energy firm Exelon and president of its generation unit. Johnson also is the former CEO of Progress Energy, which had agreed to a now-controversial merger with Duke Energy. Christopher Crane, Exelon CEO, was elected vice chairman of NEI, which has 350 corporate and institutional members.
Hunter Roberts Construction Group LLC, New York City, has named Jenny Freeman as vice president and director of health care. She had been a project executive with Skanska USA. Bill Allan also joined the firm as vice president and project executive; he had been in those same roles at Lend Lease. Lisa Howlett is named general counsel. She is formerly counsel for The Sheldrake Organization, a Manhattan developer.
On July 23, the Nevada Dept. of Transportation announced the elevation of Rudy Malfabon to director. He succeeds Susan Martinovich, who will depart on Sept. 6 after 28 years with the DOT and five years as chief. A former deputy transportation director for southern Nevada, Malfabon was construction-management services director at Jacobs Engineering. He has served on construction-management research panels for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program.
Kurt Knipp becomes chief operating officer of Environmental Systems Design Inc. (ESD), a Chicago consulting engineer specializing in high- performance building systems. He was managing director of Lake Pointe Partners LLC, a boutique performance improvement consulting firm he co-founded in 2004.
Marc Trudell has joined Canadian engineer Dessau Inc. as director expertise. The new role follows the Montreal, Quebec, firm's July 19 purchase of Sendex Environmental Corp., London, Ontario, of which he was owner and principal. Sendex becomes part of LVM, Dessau's largest unit specializing in geotechnical, materials and environmental engineering. Dessau is No. 57 on ENR's list of the Top 150 Global Design Firms, with $742 million in 2011 worldwide revenue.
Three top executives of LONCO Inc., a Denver consulting engineer, have new roles at transportation engineer Alfred Benesch & Co., Chicago, as a result of a July 20 acquisition, the new parent tells ENR. LONCO President William Epp now is a vice president of Benesch and branch manager in Naperville, Ill. Former LONCO principals Steven Banks and Mark Hamouz are now Benesch vice presidents and, respectively, the Colorado division manager and national director of bridge inspection. Benesch is ranked at No. 150 on ENR's list of the Top 500 Design Firms.
Rocky Romanella has joined UniTek Global Services Inc., a Blue Bell, Pa., telecommunications and cable infrastructure services provider, as CEO. He had been president of retail and residential operations at United Parcel Service (UPS). The firm does network engineering and design, construction, project management and installation.
GL Noble Denton, a global oil-and-gas asset technical advisory consultant, has named Arthur Stoddart as executive vice president and head of its Houston-based Americas region. It includes operations in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Brazil. Stoddart had been managing director of the company's U.K.-based consulting.
Col. Anthony C. Funkhouser has assumed command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' northwestern division, based in Portland, Ore. He succeeds Brig. Gen. John R. McMahon, who retired last month. Funkhouser was commander of the Afghanistan Engineer District-South, Kandahar, since July 2010; he also commanded a Corps division in Dallas. He will direct a five-district unit that manages civil-works and other projects in 14 states.
Kwame Building Group, a St. Louis construction management firm, has elevated Joshua Randall to president. In that role, he succeeds Anthony "Tony" Thompson, who remains chairman and CEO. Randall had been vice president of business development. Kwame, a minority-owned firm, ranks at No. 97 on ENR's list of the Top 100 Construction Management-for-Fee/Program Management Firms. The company, which Thompson founded in 1991, also has started an employee stock-ownership plan for its 60 employees.
