World Trade Center Train Station Opens With $4-billion Price Tag
March 9, 2016
A portion of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub’s long-awaited and overdue Oculus atrium opened on March 3, along with a pedestrian tunnel to a new hub entrance at Liberty and Church streets. The $4-billion facility, owned by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, has been widely criticized for its high cost, even after a redesign that included fixed, instead of the originally designed operable, wings of the Oculus, which is meant to resemble a bird of peace. When finished, the hub will provide access to the World Trade Center PATH subway, the World Trade Center buildings and the Fulton Street Transit Center.
