Olmsted Locks and Dam Officially Opens
September 13, 2018
The ribbon cutting to officially open the Olmsted Locks and Dam on the Ohio River took place Aug. 30. Olmsted—named for the town nearest it, 10 miles from Cairo, Ill.—will replace upstream locks and dams 52 and 53, which were opened in the 1920s. The old locks and dams will be dismantled by December 2020. The Olmsted Locks and Dam will be fully operational by October. The $2.77-billion project began in the Clinton administration and took more than 25 years from groundbreaking to completion.
