Top Owners Sourcebook: Relief on Rappahannock

One of the nation’s worst traffic congestion spots is getting some much-needed help with the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project in Fredericksburg, Va. Started in late 2018, the four-year, $132-million design-build effort by the Virginia Dept. of Transportation will provide southbound-through motorists with more than three miles of dedicated travel lanes and a 1,200-ft-long, five-span structure rising approximately 90 ft above the river between I-95’s existing bridges. Local traffic will use the existing southbound lanes and bridge. Scheduled for completion by mid-2022, the new crossing will also connect with the southern terminus of a 10-mile, $565-million extension of the tolled I-95 Express Lanes system, currently being constructed as a public-private partnership with Transurban and set to open in late 2022.
