UK Firm Offers Quick-Made COVID-19 Face Shield Template

April 7, 2020

London-based architect Foster + Partners is offering a design template and materials specifications for rapid mass production of cleanable and reusable face shields from the coronavirus.

Using a digital flatbed cutter, the team was able to cut and assemble components for 1,000 visors in a day, which it claims is significantly faster than would be possible using 3D printing.

“We are sharing the design templates and material specifications as an open-source design asset,” says the firm. “ This is to encourage both designers and in particular large-scale manufacturers to investigate the potential of digital and laser cutting machines as an alternative to 3D printing technology.”

The architect says it is delivering prototype visors for testing in various hospitals in London while seeking design approval for mass supply to health workers.
