Sports/Entertainment Award of Merit - Rogers Centre Renovations Phase I

PCL and its team pulled out all the stops to complete the first phase of a modernization of the home of baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays. They only had six months between seasons to execute the fast-tracked project, which involved 14 jobs rolled into one.

Planning, preordering and working on each scope concurrently helped. Each space within the stadium was reviewed with a “what can be done in this space right now” mindset. The team referred to this as a “no-flow project,” where construction activities do not move in a specific sequence or chronological order. Instead, the team focused on initiating and completing everything, everywhere, all at once.

Demolition, ironwork, mechanical, electrical, drywall, masonry and painting work all started within the first week. The tasks were further confounded by the ongoing operation of the ballpark’s back-of-house functions and the hotel. PCL deployed its in-house internet of things technology and Job Site Resourcing to advance productivity while maintaining site safety. A 360° photo and video documentation tool tracked progress. The team finished for the season opener.
