The building includes interior courtyards for daylighting, lighting control systems to reduce energy use and low-VOC products for a healthy work environment. Construction on the 12,350-sq-ft facility began August 2008 and was completed in February.

Work included a 14,500-sq-ft expansion of the emergency department, featuring three trauma rooms, 16 exam rooms and a computerized tomography room. Space also was left for a chest X-ray room in the future. Another 3,700 sq ft involved minor renovations to the hospital.

Opening this month, Crystals’ achievement marks the fourth gold certification for CityCenter. Under the rating, USGBC evaluated the entire district with the exception of the tenants’ interior spaces. Northern Arizona University broke ground on a new health and learning center, which will provide a range of health and counseling services, recreation space, classrooms and the Lumberjack Stadium for track and soccer teams and locker rooms. The 270,000-sq.-ft., $79.1-million facility is the largest project undertaken at NAU and was designed by the Phoenix office of OWP/P I Cannon Design.
