Colorado honored nearly two dozen member companies for their safety programs at the AGC/C Safety Awards Luncheon in late May.The AGC Construction Safety and Excellence Awards (CSEA) recognizes companies for safety excellence and loss-prevention programs achieved through management commitment, employee involvement and program innovation. Two AGC/C firms, GH Phipps and Metropolitan Glass, received national awards for winning in each of their categories for the CSEAs. Balfour Senior Living’s new $74-million senior living community in downtown Denver broke ground on April 24. The 281,000-sq-ft, five-story, 203-unit project will include a mix of 112 independent apartments, 65 assisted-living apartments and 26 memory-care units. The project also includes renovation of the 2,500-sq-ft historic Moffat Train Depot, which will be used as a great room. Located in the Riverfront Park neighborhood, the facility will be downtown Denver’s first upscale senior-living facility. The new administration building for the Denver Art Museum broke ground at the end of April and is projected to be complete in spring 2014. The 50,000-sq-ft building will more efficiently house the museum’s 100-plus employees, including administration, curators and others currently located elsewhere and allow for closer collaboration among them. The Denver Architectural League chose the winners of its Micro-Housing Ideas Competition on May 17, as well as seven formal recognitions at a public reception held at Humphries Poli Architects in Denver. The Colorado Dept. of Transportation has selected the team of Felsburg Holt & Ullevig (FHU) and Edward Kraemer and Sons Inc. for the U.S. 6 design-build project. Federal, state and local dignitaries gathered in Idaho Springs on May 3 to mark the next major milestone in the Colorado Dept. of Transportation’s Interstate 70 Twin Tunnels Project—the beginning of major rock blasting and removal activities to widen the eastbound tunnel bore. “The major rock blasting marks the beginning of this critical transportation project that will improve safety and provide some travel savings, all of which we can enjoy by the end of the year,” said CDOT Executive Director Don Hunt. “This is not only a significant milestone for CDOT, but for our transportation partners as well.
