Despite market volatility, Amarillo-based MH Civil Constructors saw a 38% increase in regional revenue last year over 2020, totaling $18.85 million for 2021, thanks in part to a solid backlog. The firm’s leaders focused on talking less and listening to suppliers, subcontractors, engineers and owners to make schedules, scopes and budgets work. This commitment and outcome is one of the reasons MH Civil Constructors has been named ENR Texas & Louisiana's Specialty Contractor of the Year.

Juan Moreno and Saul Hernandez founded MH Civil Constructors Inc. in February 2010, with Moreno purchasing a broken skid loader and concrete forms, and Hernandez investing $10,000 and handling paperwork. The company has been growing steadily ever since. MH currently self-performs concrete, earthwork and utilities scopes in either a general contractor or subcontractor role. About 98% of MH’s business is with municipalities, with private entities making up the remainder.

Although MH has traditionally worked within a 280-mile radius of Amarillo, the firm recently won projects in the Dallas-Fort Worth market, coinciding with its growth plans. Leadership at the corporate level will remain unchanged, but MH has restructured and expanded its operations by promoting within and hiring key staff.

One of MH's major recently completed projects is a $15.72 million effort for the city of Lubbock that consisted of replacing nine clarifies, construction a new backwash basin and replacing several valves.
