We at ENR Southwest recently announced which firms operating in the region have participated in the annual Contractors Survey. Now, ENR Southwest is proud to announce the 2019 Contractor of the Year: Ryan Cos.

Although the firm has its headquarters in Minneapolis, the company is a standard bearer in Arizona. The Phoenix office of Ryan Cos. was the first regional office more than 30 years ago and has completed hundreds of projects throughout the state. Project focus is mostly office, hotels, healthcare, and light industrial.

As a vital cog of the company the Phoenix office hosts Ryan’s new insight and innovation department. As its name suggests, the Phoenix office is highly focused on finding the best technologies to make job sites more efficient without sacrificing quality.

The firm’s office/industrial square footage under construction in Arizona between January and December 2018 was 3.4 million sq ft. Ryan’s total square footage under construction, including all product types, in Arizona was 4.6 million sq ft. Some active jobs of note include recently launching the Doubletree hotel near the Tucson Convention Center. Also, earlier this month the company broke ground on The 777 Tower, a 160,000-sq-ft, six-story office building as a part of the Novus Corridor in Tempe.

As part of the ENR Southwest Contractor of the Year process, those with votes (the other ENR regional editors) place a high value on community involvement.

Ryan is actively involved in organizations such as NAIOP, ABA, Valley Partnership, Phoenix Community Alliance, ULI, SMPS, AMCA, GPEC, and BOMA. Employees support local nonprofit organizations including United Way, Brokers for Kids, Banner Health Foundation, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Mary’s Food Bank, Make-A-Wish Foundation. Southwest region donated more than $150,000 to charities in 2018.

A specific community achievement was providing no-fee services to The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul of Arizona to complete the largest expansion of their campus in more than two decades. Ryan constructed the 40,984-sq ft expansion is a two-story outreach center adjacent to the organization’s existing dining room and clinics and is intended to provide shelter and resources for the increasing number of people experiencing homelessness throughout the Valley.

We will have much more on the firm in the June issue of ENR Southwest.
