Last month, ENR Southeast announced its annual Best Projects award winners. Now we're announcing this year's "Best Projects" awards for safety. Known as the Excellence in Safety Award, this honor goes to the project—and project team—that our safety judges determine delivered the most impressive overall safety program, paired with outstanding safety results. A big thank you goes to this year's safety judges, who were: Michael Newkirk, executive director for HSE strategic initiatives with FLUOR, Greenville, S.C.; and Steve Trickel, vice president of safety with Zachry Industrial, San Antonio, Texas.
And the winners are:
Excellence in Safety Award:
Surf City Bridge Replacement, Surf City, N.C.
Submitted by Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc.
In its entry, submitter Balfour Beatty Infrastructure noted: "The team embraced Balfour Beatty’s Zero Harm culture. This drove a consistent focus on training, planning, hazard identification, and injury prevention methods that are above and beyond the industry standards."
Describing the reasons why he voted for the Surf City Bridge Replacement as his pick for the top safety award, FLUOR's Newkirk remarked on the team's use of proactive training and safety planning to prevent incidents. He added: "I was also impressed by their efforts to eliminate worker exposures to high-risk situations (e.g. lifting zones), use of the 'see-something-say-something' program as a leading indicator to address unsafe acts and conditions, and implementation of stretch and flex to reduce ergonomic risks."
Award of Merit
One Thousand Museum, Miami, Fla.
Submitted by Plaza Construction and DeSimone Consulting Engineers
ENR Southeast will provide readers with more information about these projects and the safety results that they achieved in our October 28 print edition. Additionally, we will present this year's Southeast Best Projects awards on Nov. 1 in Orlando.
Congratulations to this year’s safety award winners!
