ENR Mountain States, working in concert with other regional ENR publications and editors across the U.S., has selected the Colorado office of national engineering consulting firm AECOM as our Design Firm of the Year for 2014. AECOM was chosen by a vote of the ENR editors from a small group of finalists.
AECOM saw strong revenue growth last year (details about that will appear in the Top Design rankings in the June issue of ENR Mountain States) and has built an impressive portfolio of regional projects over the past few years.
Chief among those is the recently opened Denver Union Station renovation. AECOM was the prime consultant leading design and engineering of the $500-million DUS project, including transit planning and design, engineering and oversight of the architectural and public realm design. AECOM served as the preliminary engineering design lead for the 0%-30% National Environmental Policy Act phase and lead design firm for the design-build.
The project included civil design (roadways, track, drainage and utilities), structures for the bus terminal and systems for train operations. Cross business line opportunities included landscape architecture, lighting and architecture. AECOM coordinated with dozens of subconsultants and stakeholders to shepherd the project through the regulatory and construction process.
Another large AECOM project is the $350-million I-225 Rail Line under construction in Aurora, Colo. Part of Regional Transportation District’s FasTracks Program, the I-225 Rail Line is a 10.5-mile light rail line within Aurora that will provide key regional connections to the East and Southeast rail lines. It will connect to major activity centers like the Aurora City Center, Anschutz-Fitzsimons Medical Center and Denver International Airport through a transfer at Peoria to the East Rail Line.
AECOM is also working with the Colorado Recovery Office to support Colorado’s rebuilding from last September’s floods. The firm is providing real-time situational awareness for deployment of resources, reporting of critical data, tracking and resolving conflicts for decision-making and communication.
Other current projects include working with the Colorado Dept. of Transportation as the portfolio management, cash management and program management contractor to oversee CDOT’s Responsible Acceleration of Maintenance and Partnerships (RAMP) program and CDOT’s regular capital improvement program, among other contracts.
AECOM is the prime consultant leading design and engineering on the Mason Express (MAX) Bus Rapid Transit Project in Fort Collins, Colo., and the lead landscape architect for the Stapleton Conservatory Green Park and Plaza in Denver.
Kaia Nesbitt, southwest mountain area manager for AECOM, said about the Design Firm of the Year selection: “This is a great honor, and we’re very excited to hear the news. Our project teams have been immersed in a range of infrastructure projects in the region, from light rail and bus rapid transit to flood recovery and community park design, and it’s wonderful to get this recognition.”
A profile story on the firm will appear in the June issue of ENR Mountain States.
