ENR Mountain States is busy finalizing the rankings for our annual top general contractors of 2022. These lists are based on 2021 revenues for work on projects located in the Mountain States region (Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and North and South Dakota), as reported to us by the firms themselves.

Early results show that revenues last year for the region’s contractors were up in most areas, especially for firms located in Salt Lake City, Boise and Denver.

The following are the current contenders for the top positions in this year’s GC rankings in both parts of the region.

First, the top 20 in Colorado and Wyoming and the Dakotas, presented in random (not ranked) order. Note that this working list could change as our research progresses toward publication of the rankings in our August issue and more firms complete their surveys before the final deadline of May 2.

The current Top 20 firms (in random order) are: Federal Contracting Inc. (Bryan Construction), Mortenson Construction, Hensel Phelps Construction, Catamount Constructors Inc., JE Dunn Construction, GE Johnson, GH Phipps Construction Cos., FCI Constructors, Saunders Construction, Adolfson & Peterson Construction, Kiewit Corp., Shaw Construction, Swinerton Builders, Haselden Construction, Holder Construction, Turner Construction, Brinkmann Constructors, Milender White, JHL Constructors, Ryan Cos. US Inc.

The top 20 (non-ranked, random order only) firms in the Intermountain area (Utah, Idaho and Montana) for 2020 include: Big-D Construction, Engineered Structures Inc. (ESI), Whiting-Turner Contracting Co., Hughes General Contractors Inc., JE Dunn Construction, Haskell, Jacobsen Construction, Okland Construction, Layton Construction, Staker Parson Cos., Westland Construction, Holder Construction, Mortenson, Brinkmann Constructors, ARCO Construction Cos., BHI, McAlvain Construction, HITT Contracting, Sundt Construction, Bonneville Builders.

These contractors are the most likely firms in the region—of those who have submitted their revenue totals—to make our final cut, but this list is not yet final.

After further research, we also will announce our contractors of the year for the region, so stay tuned.
