The ENR regional editors have selected two companies as 2024 Contractors of the Year in the Mountain States: Saunders Construction of Denver for Colorado, Wyoming and the Dakotas, and the Salt Lake City office of Haskell for the Intermountain area of Utah, Idaho and Montana. Firms of the Year winners are selected based on multiple criteria, including revenue growth, community impact and other considerations.

Saunders Construction

Saunders doubled its revenue over the past two years and recently launched a new business subsidiary for self-perform and third-party concrete services. Ranked in the No. 2 spot on last year’s Top Contractors list, Saunders has continued to expand its geographic footprint to the mountains, southern Colorado and Wyoming.

A few of the firm’s key 2023 projects include One River North, a Denver high-rise building featuring a flora filled facade; the University of Colorado’s first net zero energy project, CU Anschutz Campus Safety; and the Steamboat Ski Base Area project, which includes the longest and fastest gondola ride, Wild Blue Gondola. Saunders employees also volunteered more than 300 hours in 2023 and raised more than $52,000 for local youth-oriented causes through the contractor’s Building Confidence in the Kids program.

Haskell

Haskell announced in 2021 it would grow its integrated service offering across the United States by designating three existing offices, Jacksonville, Fla., Dallas and Salt Lake City, as Regional Operations Centers. Since then, the Salt Lake office has experienced tremendous growth – particularly in its health care, municipal and water markets, and reports a 160% jump in revenue for the past year. Haskell has managed to deliver complex projects efficiently, even in the challenging terrain and weather conditions of the Wasatch Mountains.

Key projects in 2023 included the City Creek Water Treatment Plant in Salt Lake City, the Confluence Park Water Reclamation Facility in Hurricane, Utah, and the Helena Montana Temple for the LDS church. While building the temple in Helena, Haskell donated modular panels for use in temporary housing units to a local builder in the community. The panels were designed for easy assembly and disassembly, providing a flexible and durable solution for individuals and families experiencing homelessness or transitional situations.

A complete ranking of the region’s top contractors will be published in the July 22 issue of ENR Mountain States, along with feature length profiles of both Saunders and Haskell.
