Award of Merit Cultural/Worship: McCormick Stillman Railroad Park - Model Railroad Building
This unique LEED-Gold building on the 27-acre McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park in Scottsdale, Ariz., houses three model railroad layouts, four club meeting rooms and exhibit space, where model railroad aficionados can share their craft with visitors and tell stories of how railroads helped define Arizona and the nation as a whole. With a design that weaves contemporary architecture into a historic context, the 12,000-sq-ft structure is long and low, recalling the style of nineteenth century train sheds. Inside, lots of natural light, exposed structural elements and multiple floor heights provide visual access to the displays at various eye levels.
