Giving its student design competition a pragmatic twist, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating & Air-Conditioning Engineers is calling for entries, by May 4, for a heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration system that will likely be built. The design, including laboratories, office space and a vivariuman enclosure for plants and animals in their natural habitatwould turn a 127,165-sq-ft distribution center in New York City into a biotech research facility. The competition also includes an architectural design for an 11,700-sq-ft addition. All team members must be enrolled in an undergraduate program during the semester they contribute to the design. Competition information is posted on www.ASHRAE.org.
